The tutorial will be held in Sydney on Tuesday 5 July, Melbourne Tuesday 12 July and the symposium in Sydney only, on Wednesday, 6 July. SECURITY TUTORIAL Abe Singer's tutorial on "Logging Infrastructure and Log Analysis" will describe how to build an infrastructure to collect, preserve, and extract useful information from computer operating system and application logs - ultimately to help the system administrator learn more about what is happening on their systems and networks. The tutorial will be valuable to computer security and system administrators that deal with UNIX, Linux, MAC OS X and Windows, particularly those managing heterogeneous networks. Abe Singer is a respected Open Systems security expert with the Security Technologies Group at the San Diego Supercomputer Center. In providing operational security for the Center, he participates in incident response and forensics, and is expanding the SDSC logging infrastructure. His research is in pattern analysis of syslog data for data mining. Abe is the author of "Building a Logging Infrastructure" (SAGE, 2004. http://www.sage.org), and is currently writing a book on Log Analysis, to be published by O'Reilly in early 2006. Abe has served as an expert witness for the US Department of Justice in cases of illegal intrusion and has been named "Investigator of the Year" by the High Tech Crime Investigation Association (HTCIA). As a bonus, Abe will also be presenting a paper at the Systems Administration symposium (Sydney only) entitled "Security Without Firewalls" that will challenge the industry wide preoccupation with firewalls and back this up with his real life experience in networks containing thousands of machines. More information on the security tutorial is available online at http://classic.auug.org.au/events/2005/sysadmin/ SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATION SYMPOSIUM The AUUG Systems Administration Symposium, is a chance to expand your knowledge, meet with domain experts and peers, and discuss the administration of Unix, Linux, MAC OS X and heterogeneous systems that include Windows.
